The FORWARD Method™

Daily Energy Needs Calculator Calories & Kilojoules (kcal / kJ)

Estimate the energy your body uses at rest and across an average day. This calculator provides a starting estimate based on your age, height, weight, sex used in the equation and usual activity level. Results show in calories (kcal) or kilojoules (kJ), the unit on Australian food labels.

Your result is an estimate, not a directly measured metabolism or a personalised calorie prescription.

Sex assigned at birth

This calculator uses equations based on sex assigned at birth because the underlying research and reference values were developed using these biological characteristics.

Usual activity level

Choose the level that best represents your average week, not your most active day. Exercise is already included in this estimate, so do not add exercise calories again.

Common questions

How many kilojoules are in a calorie?

One food calorie (kcal) equals 4.184 kilojoules (kJ). To convert calories to kilojoules, multiply by about 4.2, so 2,000 kcal is roughly 8,400 kJ. To convert kilojoules to calories, divide by about 4.2.

Should I use calories or kilojoules?

Either works. They measure the same thing in different units. Australian food labels must show kilojoules and many also show calories, so kilojoules can make label comparisons easier. Use the switch at the top of your results to choose.

What is BMR?

Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses at complete rest for essentials like breathing, circulation and temperature regulation. Your daily energy needs add an allowance for your usual movement, work and exercise on top of your BMR.

How accurate is this calculator?

It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, one of the most widely used and validated estimates. Actual needs still vary from person to person, so treat your result as a starting point and adjust based on your energy, hunger, progress and wellbeing.

This calculator provides a population-based estimate and cannot directly measure your metabolism or daily energy expenditure. If you are under 18, pregnant, breastfeeding, experiencing an eating disorder or receiving treatment for a medical condition, seek individual professional advice before making significant changes to your energy intake.
