Navigate the Menopause Noise
10 questions to ask before the next menopause claim, test, supplement or program gets your money.
Someone just told you what you need. Before you buy it, book it, test it or change what you’re doing, run the claim through these 10 questions.
What exactly is being claimed?
Separate the actual claim from the story being used to explain it.
What evidence supports it — rather than simply making the mechanism sound plausible?
A plausible biological mechanism isn’t the same as evidence that an intervention improves a meaningful outcome.
Was the research actually conducted in people like me?
Findings in mice, cells or a very different group may not carry across to perimenopausal women.
How large and meaningful was the effect?
“Statistically significant” can still be far too small to change how you feel or function.
Does the wider body of evidence agree?
One study is a single data point. Look for whether the overall evidence points the same way.
Who funded the research, and who benefits from this explanation?
Funding doesn’t automatically invalidate research, but it’s information worth knowing.
Is this identifying a problem I have, or creating one I didn’t know I needed to solve?
Notice when the solution arrives before you knew you had the problem.
Would knowing this information actually change what I do?
A test is only useful when the result could genuinely change your next decision.
What are the alternatives — including doing nothing for now?
Waiting and watching is a legitimate option, not a failure to act.
Who is giving me this advice, and what professional standards are they accountable to?
Ask what professional body, if any, holds them to a code of conduct.

Still not sure?
That’s okay. Sometimes the evidence genuinely isn’t clear — and you don’t have to make a decision just because somebody has presented you with one.
