Why I learn’t to fast like a girl

So I learn’t how to fast like a girl. Why would a guy learn to fast like a girl? Well, university taught me hormones. It's alot more than just reproduction. It influences women who aren't cycling, who are in peri or menopause, through appetite, energy, stress, recovery, metabolism, there are variations. It became aware to me that Fasting is an ancient tool. It’s as old as many religious teachings and lot of the research or most of the research I could find, including in assignments at university, was based on men. And women aren't small men. In contrast Dr Mindy Peltz, the author of Fast Like a Girl in contrast has considered fasting in harmony with the phases of the hormone cycles. She advocates about the nuances of fasting for women and set up a lot of specialised protocols for women for all different life stages and conditions. So I was impressed with her work.

When an opportunity came up to be certified to be a Fast Like a Girl coach, I really jumped at it. Like anything it gets simplified, like everything. People say, 'Oh, women shouldn't fast.' That’s not a no just based on sex. It's not that you shouldn't, but there's just nuances. You're dealing with more hormones. Context matters and it's not for everyone. But for the right person and at the right time and under the right conditions, it can be very powerful. And one of the biggest learnings I learned over the years is it's not just about the fasting window. It's probably more important about the eating window.

If you're reducing the time that you're eating, then it's especially important when you're fueling and what nutrition goes in there because that impacts how easy it is when you're not eating and how you're feeling. Crucially, it impacts your metabolism right and it's similar to managing a GLP-1 medication like Monjaro or a Ozempic and other weight-loss appetite suppressants. In a smaller eating window, there’s a smaller opportunity to refuel and nurture. You really need to be more precise about what you're eating.

So yes, I'm a qualified Clinical Nutritionist and I'm a certified Fasting like a Girl Coach. So if you're male, if you're female, I can manage both of those things so they work together not against each other . And to the right person, at the right time it can be a really powerful tool to manage your health. And importantly, similar to a GLP-1 medication, it can be successful at helping managing appetite. It's not a magic trick. It's a tool. And like any tool, you need to know how to use it to get the best out of it.
